The editor of the Irish Daily star has resigned in the wake of controversy about his decision to publish topless photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge.
Michael O’Kane had been suspended from duties since September after publication of the pictures, which were apparently taken with long lenses to avoid detection at a private chateau in Provence.
In a statement the paper’s co-owners Independent News and Media said that having considered the issues that arose from that publication in tandem with O’Kane, he had decided to resign immediately.
The company added that O’Kane had acted in a highly professional and appropriate manner at all times and thanked him for his service.
The paper is also partly owned by Richard Desmond.
