During his visit, the King told fifteen new embassy secretaries, “Your mission will be to defend and promote the interests of Spain through the medium of diplomacy, an indispensable instrument of the state in a world every day more complex.”

He said Spain’s foreign policy must be based upon the Spanish constitution’s principles and values, including democracy and human rights, and on “a firm commitment to world peace, respect for diversity, promotion of culture and knowledge, protection of the environment, and the promotion of measures that permit sustainable development. ”
