What was originally (back in 2006) a minor scandal about the hacking of British royals’ voicemail messages on behalf of a tabloid newspaper has ballooned into something much bigger and more sinister.

Up to now I’ve avoided mentioning this case because it is disturbing and has only a tenuous royal connection. But it is true that the Queen’s safety was once trusted to this man.
